Conan The Barbarian. There’s just something about that movie. The epic feel, the adventure, the philosophy, the performances. The odd mix of fantasy and history. An amazing score, set design, and cinematography, and Arnold punches out a camel! I always get something new out of it whenever I see it (and it’s bee countless times).

The opening scene is the best scene in the movie. It hooks you right away. Three guys in a car that, for some reason, is making a thumping sound. It’s probably a flat tire, you think. They go back to open the trunk, and now you are pretty sure it’s a flat tire. Until you see the guy in the trunk. Then Joe Pesci pulls out that meat cleaver and delivers rapid fire thrusts to the guys torso. This is when you know. You are in for a wild ride indeed.

Goodfellas, yes, but not just Godfather II but I love the first Godfather as well. Mob movies where you care about the mobsters, and wanna live the life with them, that’s the ticket! Godfather movies for the drama of mob family/real family and Goodfellas for the intricate explanations of how in modern world mobsters really work (Henry’s narration of knowing what they mean as opposed to what they say is priceless and completely sucks you in). Gotta love popcorn movies!!!

Lets not lose the Casino thread. Yes I rewatch the entire Godfather saga (#3 less often) and Goodfellas again and again. And Citizen Kane. But Casino is one of the best directed, written, paced and scripted films ever. Each character is memorably acted – Sharon Stone was never better; Don Rickles, Dick Smothers and Alan King as well; DeNiro, Woods and Pesci at the top of their form. So many great scenes – Remo saying “Why take a chance?” dooming Andy Stone; Nicky bashing Billy Sherbert with the telephone; Sam dragging Ginger and saying “Leave me now”; Nicky and his brother breathing (literally) their last in a pit. I crawl into this film every time and live in its world for almost 3 hours and am left wanting to see more. I will also rewatch any old movie starring Bette Davis or Humphrey Bogart, at any hour, on any day.

Forrest Gump, Shawshank Redemption and… Joe Versus the Volcano.
I watch the first two because they are great and on cable all the time. I watch Joe because… it has some strange connection to me. I think it is the ‘I know he can get the job, but can he do the job’ scene. I really do think that movie is better than most people say it is. I have always seen it as a study in loneliness. If you look at his lamp in his office, the whole events of the movie on on there. My theory on this and why Meg Ryan keeps showing up in different roles? Joe never leaves the office. His sickness is not a ‘brain cloud.’ He really has cancer and dreams of a different life where he escapes the sickness and trivialities of his daily life.
I don’t know if that is deep, or just justifying liking a bad movie.-

Look for the theme of lamps in the movie. Joe hates the lights of the office. He has the Hawaiian lamp. The doctor’s office has a ton of lamps, and a light on the desk that looks like a lamp bulb. Almost every image until they get to the boat is filled with lamps.
Glad to know that there are others out there who like this movie as well.
I also have to add that I could watch Goonies on a daily basis.

Joe vs the Volcano is totally underated. Love that movie. I love the scene when he quits. When he’s walking out and is told “you’ll be easy to replace”. You see him stop and whiper “I should say something” and turns around and tells off his boss. I’ve always wanted to quit like that… “….I’m going to leave you hear, because what could be worst that that.”. Brillant.

I wish Joe vs. the Volcano was actually on more. Hanks and Ryan had a seemingly effortless chemistry that they somehow could not recapture in You’ve Got Mail. Your take on it is interesting. “I’m not arguing that with you.” The Waponi-wu people were cool too with a nice Abe Vigoda cameo. Love that they love orange soda.

Adding 1 more to the Joe Vs the Volcano lovers. It really is an underrated movie, and I like that a lot of folks seem to be realizing that as of late. When he thinks he’ll die, and he looks at the moon and says, “My God, I forgot how BIG…thank you for my life.” Surprisingly poignant in such a goofy film, and Hanks really sells it. Unapologetically love this movie.

It’s Always Going to Be Something W/ Me
I’ve always thought “Joe Vs. The Volcano” could be one of those films that develops a cult following over the years and becomes more popular as it ages. My family and I think it’s a fable too. It’s a simple story, but it is told with this kind of quiet quirkiness that draws you in and keeps you involved even though it’s silly at times. There’s a sweetness and a seriousness in it too. I love the scene where Joe tells his driver he’s alone, but it’s OK because “sometimes in your life you aren’t supposed to have anybody.” or something like that.

When Joe vs The Volcano came out in the theaters I saw it with two friends. There only 2 other people in the theater. We watched, we thought it was awful and THEN…the next night we went to see it again and this time it was just 3 in the theater. LOVE IT. The music is lovely and it is a study in being alone and being ok with that. My favorite part is when he is buying the luggage. “May you live for 1000 years!”

Pulp Fiction also but the the edited version is hard to watch. And Singing in the Rain. All my movies. One movie I watch everytime it is on TV is A League of Their Own…I just loooovvvve at the end when they all get to go into the museum and look at their history – brings a tear to my eye. And, everytime I hope and pray that she won’t drop the ball when Kat slides into her…she always does, to my disapointment.
Another movie I watched all the time as a kid: Heavyweights.

And see, I find Dangerous Liaisons to be terribly overrated. I feel like everyone’s trying to outact everyone else, and it all feels false. In my opinion, Valmont, with Clive Owen, is a much more interesting and entertaining take on the story.

I’ve loved Dangerous Liaisons since I was a teen. It has some of the wittiest, cattiest one-liners. And I love Glenn Close’s monologue about how she invented herself. If it appears overacted, I think that’s intentional and works, since these very rich, very bored people have nothing better to do than try to one up each other and destroy lives.

Dangerous Liasions is one of my all time fav films – it is perfect and no adaptation/knock-off has come close. The intelligence of the dialogue. they don’t write stuff that witty anymore. I must watch it everytime it’s on. Others include The Last Seduction – love film noir and the modern take in this movie doesn’t ruin the genre, Double Indemnity- for obvious reasons, Peyton Place and The 50’s remake of Imitation of Life – both Lana Turner flicks. Plus for modern days – Armageddon, Love Actually, Princess Bride, My Best Friends Wedding, Scream, 28 Days Later, Clueless, Bridget Jones Diary, Princess Bride, Love Jones, Coming to America, Harlem Nights and Boomerang.

YES! The original Star Wars trilogy, specifically Empire, or any of the Indiana Jones, but specifically Raiders. Also Singing in the Rain and Princess Bride. I have seen them all dozens and dozens of times. They are all movies I not only get sucked into when I’m channel surfing, but also will intentionally put them in to “watch” if I’ve got some big chore to do. I think it’s because it’s not like I need to watch every moment, because I know them so well, but it’s…easy.. to have them on in the background. I can say the lines along with my favorite scenes and then go back to whatever I’m doing…

There are so many…Romy & Michelle’s HS Reunion, Back to the Future (all 3), 10 Things I Hate About You, The Wedding Singer, Ferris Bueller, Hook, etc etc. Even if I own it on DVD and the version on screen is highly edited and full of commercials, I’ll still leave it on.

Clue. When I was roughly 11 or 12 and had a nasty cold and confined to my room for days, my parents moved a VCR into my room to entertain me. I watched our version of Clue taped off of Comedy Central about three times (at least) a day. I watched it a zillion more times after that and I probably used to have the whole film memorized. Now I pop out the DVD fairly frequently.
Others include: any Pixar film, Love Actually, Clueless, 10 Things I Hate About You, A Knight’s Tale, The Dark Knight, and all the Star Wars movies.

CLUE for the WIN!!! I watch this at least once a week. It’s like talking to an old friend. It is so funny! Others on my list are: Ghostbusters, The First Wives Club, Shawshank, The Princess Bride, and Sense and Sensibility to name just a few.

Yeah FWC and PB are always on and usually hook me too. Shawshank is golden, such an effecting movie…I love when Red talks about Andy leaving…something to the effect of “some birds aren’t meant to be caged, they’re feathers are just too bright” or something like that! Real friendship is more effecting than romance.

I think i have watched Jurassic park and Super Troopers both at least 25 times. But i am sure i have seen Jaws, Gladiator, and Cliffhanger (ya i know) at least 15 to 20 each. I can’t help it when they are on.

If I see JP coming on, I have to wait for the scene where they first see the dinosaurs. It’s absolutely wonderful. Sam Neill and Laura Dern convey that stunned, joyful, incredulous amazement so well.
And I love when Jeff Goldblum gives the foreshadowing warning about how you can’t manage nature the way the scientists are so sure they have, by making all the animals female. “Nature finds a way…” Great stuff!

I’ve seen White Chicks more than I’d like to admit. It’s probably one of the only movies I’d leave on no matter what’s on. What does that movie do for me? I think the simple fact that there could be a reality out in some alternate universe where those two guys could pass for those two white chicks and succeed. That gets me every time.

I’ve seen The Goonies so many times that I can fall asleep in the middle of it, mouthing along to the dialogue, wake up, and still be in the right spot of the script 30 or 60 minutes later. It’s the first movie I vividly remember seeing in a theater as a kid and I grew up just 60 miles south of where it was filmed. Another that makes me long for my childhood is Without a Paddle. I’ve seen it dozens of times. I know. But it captures growing up in Oregon so greatly in the opening montage, I can’t help myself.

ive seen independence day and forrest gump both at least 20 times, forrest gump because its a great, heartwarming movie that makes me cry every single time (not in the obvious scenes but when forrest and jenny reunit in washington in the middle of all the people)
independence day isnt actually any good, i thought it was when i first saw it in 96, ive outgrown the movie, but i keep watching it, something about it just comforts me.
this year i might have watched casablanca about 8 times, dont know why, its just the perfect movie.

I can quote the entirety of A League of Their Own from beginning to end. I also had three copies (1 VHS, 1 taped-from-tv, 1 DVD) at one point. And no matter how many times I have seen it, I never fail to cry at the end.
Dear Frankie is well on its way to number two on my all-time watched list. Its perfect for Sunday afternoons, random weeknights, pretty much any day or time in general.

Aside from obvious cult classics like American Psycho, and popular cable favorites like Back to the Future, I am always drawn to watching classic Hitchcock films over and over. I have never gotten tired of North by Northwest, Vertigo, and Psycho. Between the acting, settings, cinematography, costumes, and screenplays, these films seem to be fresh everytime they are viewed even though they are over 50 years old. Along with Kubrick, most of Hitchcocks films have transended time.

Kubrick films are so challenging to the viewer, I am a real fan of films that are hard to watch and comprehend. I love Kubrick’s films and can watch them anytime, no matter what mood I’m in. The Hitchcock films you listed are the standard of excellence for the genre. I recommend watching Rebecca, my favorite Hitchcock film.

'The Godfather 2': Movies I watch and watch again
Maybe it’s because The Godfather 2 seems to be playing on cable TV in a loop for all eternity–but I realized the other day that I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve heard Michael Corleone say to his brother, “I know it was you, Fredo. You broke my heart.” Not that I mind: There’s a profound comfort in re-watching a movie you love, even though (or maybe because) the scenes have worn grooves in your consciousness. My list of most-watched titles includes Casablanca, Citizen Kane, All About Eve, the Marx Brothers’ Duck Soup, and, for reasons I can’t fathom but just accept, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. And Fellini’s Amarcord. Hmm, and Close Encounters of the Third Kind. And Truly, Madly, Deeply, of course, even though some of my more austere critic friends roll their eyes when I say so.That’s the thing about rewatching movies: Many of them are good, but it almost doesn’t matter if they aren’t–there’s just something intensely pleasing about their familiarity, and the satisfaction with which we anticipate what we already know is going to happen, or what we’re going to see, or what Michael is going to say to Fredo, Neurologist-author Oliver Sacks could write a great article about what’s going on at a molecular level as we anticipate a stunning scene or even a beloved dumb one.
This is not a Deep Critic Thought, just a statement and an invitation: I can’t get enough of some movies. (And once in a lifetime is enough for others–Antichrist, I’m talking to you.) So tell me what you watch over and over again, and why.
